Saudi Arabia wants to lead the UN Human Rights Council, which raises anger among activists who fear an erode of the Council's credibility. An "abomination, and cynical by a nation that beheads people on public squares," said a human rights organization in a statement on Wednesday evening.

There has been rumors for a while that Saudi Arabia wants to lead the UN's highest body for defense of human rights. Now it appears the rumors have been confirmed by several diplomatic sources. It has had human rights organizations to react with pure rage outbursts.


Saudi Arabia is one of the world's worst repressive regimes with massive violations of human rights, according to Amnesty, Human Rights Watch and the UN itself. One notable example is Saudi blogger Raif Badawi who was sentenced to ten years in prison and 1,000 lashes for having started a site for political debate. In addition, the country is sharply criticized for the ongoing attacks against Yemen, where the ruthless bombing of civilians is equated with war crimes.

The Swedish Foreign Minister, Margot Wallström, earlier this year criticized Saudi Arabia's lack of human rights, and broke the Swedish agreement on military cooperation with the country. This led to a deep diplomatic crisis.

- Choosing Saudi Arabia as the world leader of human rights is like having a pyromaniac to head the fire department, said Hillel Neuer, director of the human rights organization UN Watch, on Wednesday evening. Saudi Arabia is a repressive fundamentalist regime, according to Neuer.

- We urge the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power and the EU Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini to condemn this heinous and cynical move by a regime that beheads people in public squares, systematically oppress women and homosexuals and imprisons bloggers like Raif Badawi, said Hillel Neuer.

Nadia Boehlen, spokesperson for Amnesty International in Geneva, said earlier this week to the newspaper Tribune de Geneve that Saudi Arabia's ambition is 'unreal'.

- It is indeed ironic to see a country that scorns human rights through numerous public executions, try to become the leader of an organization whose mission is to strengthen and protect human rights, said Nadia Boehlen.

- Saudi Arabia as chair of the Human Rights Council would be the final nail in the coffin and for the credibility of a body that already has dictatorships as members. The Council has already been criticized for turning a blind eye to the world's worst oppressors, says Hillel Neuer.

Saudi Arabia is said to been engaged in intensive lobbying, to become head of the Human Rights Council with 47 member countries. German Joachim Rücker have had the post since July 2014. Each leader has one year. 

The country clearly has a chance to go out on top of the lobbying battle and become the leader of the world's human rights colossus. Saudi Arabia is included in the Asian group, which is in line to become chairman country.

- It is true that Asia is up as head of the Human Rights Council in 2016. It is up to the regional country group to nominate names. Asia has thirteen member countries of the Council, and in theory, anyone of them could lead the Human Rights Council, said Rolando Gomez, a spokesman for the UN Human Rights Council.

Siilaanyo’s Legacy failed to bring Adequate Government to Somaliland:

Somaliland: 14 may 2015 - Csh - Siilaanyo has been the president of Somaliland for the past five years. The people of Somaliland overwhelmingly supported him and more than 50% cast their votes for him. The question is what they expected from him? The people of Somaliland as well as friends of the country expected him to lead the country with justice, security, development and good governance. Due to Siilaanyo’s experiences and his knowledge most Somalilanders have predicted to achieve a recognition from the international community. Again, in the year 2010 the Somaliland voters were very highly enthusiastic to elect Siilaanyo as president. They believed when president Siilaanyo finished his term he would leave the country with a bright future.

However, Somaliland people were left with nothing but disappointment by President Siilaanyo and his administration. After five years of his ruling, Somaliland has become politically isolated, economically ruined, security jeopardized, the elections postponed, and Somaliland’s regions falling apart. Rumors then circulated stating the country

was worried President Siilanayo would not able to rule the country due to his aging and health.

Since Somaliland has regained its own sovereignty and power, the country had a good relationship with its neighboring countries such as Ethiopia. However, last year the group of the rebellions established a base in Ethiopia and not far from the borders between Ethiopia and Somaliland. The group was declared the regional autonomy and ready to liberate the Awdal region. The Ethiopian government knew and would not take any action at all. What does mean that?

Look at this scenario, Ethiopia is part of the AMISOM, and has mandated to cross the border at any time feels insecurity with its own country as well as Somalia or Somaliland. Because of enhanced due diligence of the security, Ethiopia has able to claim to restore the stability. Therefore, if Somaliland doesn’t keep its own security and not maintain the law and order in the country, Ethiopia military will enter inside the Somaliland border with intentions to secure the stability and the peace of the country. At the same time, they have accesses to control Saylac and Red Sea and will keep as long as it needs.

President Siilaanyo had destroyed every Somaliland institution, the parliament has been dysfunctional due to intervening the executive branch, the general auditor had never submitted any public report since the day nominated the position, the Supreme Court justice had under control by the presidential office, the persecutor had never worked as independent. The house of elder as well as the chair of the house has been piloted by presidential palace orders. Somaliland people have been suffering from high inflation, unemployment, high emigrate, high poverty, lack of public health, less quality of public education, fraud, corruption, nepotism and tribalism. At the same time, Siilaanyo is still looking to stay in office.

The International Community is seriously concerned over the decision by the Somaliland House of Elders - Guurti.

The Guurti decision to hold elections in Somaliland in April 2017 unilaterally not only threatens to undermine stability and the democratic process within Somaliland; it would also damage Somaliland's public image and undermine our long-standing partnership

This is per a statement released by the UK which is chairing the Somaliland Democratizations Steering Committee on Behalf of the United Nations and the governments of UK, US, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, France and Germany pertaining to the Somaliland electoral process.

The Statement reads

Quote- The International Community is seriously concerned over the decision by the Somaliland House of Elders (Guurti) to extend the terms of office of the House of Representatives and the President by 21 months.

We are particularly alarmed that such a critical decision was taken without consensus among all Somaliland parties. Dialogue and consensus building have been defining elements of Somaliland's peace and democratic credentials. In the eyes of the International Community, the Guurti's decision places Somaliland's democratic credentials at serious risk.

Pursuing the above-mentioned decision by the House of Elders unilaterally not only threatens to undermine stability and the democratic process within Somaliland; it would also damage Somaliland's public image and undermine our long-standing partnership. We therefore call for immediate structured dialogue on the election timeline and the term extension in line with the announcement by Vice-President Abdirahman Isma'il Seylici today, and earlier announcements by President Silanyo. Such a dialogue should revisit the Guurti's decision and lead to an agreement to overcome the current crisis and ensure that the elections are held as soon as possible.

As Somaliland's international partners we remain ready to engage in this process. Representatives of the International Community intend to visit Hargeisa in one week to continue dialogue on this important issue. International partners are now considering the implications and consequences of the Guurti's decision which puts in jeopardy the foundations of the Somaliland Special Arrangement. In the meantime, we urge restraint and appeal to all stakeholders to make every effort to protect Somaliland's democratic credentials, and call for the release of all of those arrested for political reasons.-Unquote
