Somaliland is political crisis Model Nation Grapples with Graft leading by President Siilaanyo regime
Somaliland, a de facto independent state in the Horn of Africa was a British protectorate over 80 years. Shortly after gaining its independence in 1960 it merged with the Italian colony in Somalia to form the first Somalia Republic. Following the collapse of the Somali state in 1991 due to the civil war,
Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia, claiming the colonial boundaries; it inherited from the British Government in 1960
Since then, Somaliland has undergone a remarkable political transformation, while it has departed from the customary way of governance to a constitutional democratic form of government under the Constitution, which was approved by the public in a referendum conducted on 31 May 2001.
From that time onwards, Somaliland has gone through different levels of presidential, parliamentary, and local elections, while the opposing contesting parties have accepted the results.
Some argue that Somaliland is living through the worst political crisis since the 2010 the elections were won by the former President of Dahir Riyale. That is not certainly exaggerated. Somaliland’s democracy under President Siilaanyo Government is at risk. Even so, finding a solution to corruption will not be easy, since it requires strong leaders who can commit to injecting greater transparency.
Somaliland has long been considered one of Horn of Africa least corrupt countries before Siilaanyo regime, which is why recent revelations have left the nation in shock. Both right and left wing parties have been implicated in corruption scandals, and President Siilaanyo his son-law has been accused of using his influence to make lucrative corruption and land deals.
The scandals have led to a serious decline in public confidence in the political elite and have damaged Siilaanyo reputation and her ambitious reform agenda for the up-coming election end of 2015.
After a period of many of Somaliand’s political leaders have begun to recognize that the general public has grown extremely disenchanted with them and the political system as a whole. As a remedy, the leader of Somaliland National Party has begun behind-the-scene negotiations for a “great accord” that would be implemented by a central institution, like the National Election Commission, to make electoral promotion reform a priority.
The current crisis began in October 2014. When the speakers of Parliament and Members of Parliament try to re-correct the election act (Article 20), when the Siilaanyo regime manipulate and miss-interpret the constitutionals acts of elections which has described the process of the Presidential and Parliamentary for up-coming elections in Somaliland.
Because of they has been changed some elements, regarding the way out of the procedure of election. For example they add in the act of election article 20; the Presidential and Parliamentary election will be held, after six months after the voter registration will be finalized.
On the other hand they didn’t emphasis the certain point for that times the National Election Commission of Somaliland will provide to the nation.
However, it’s quit and clear the current government of the Siilaanyo regime has preferring by any mean how will acquire the two years extension without legal justification
The international donors those who support the elections and democratic promotion of Somaliland people they had not formally welcome the Presidential election of Somaliland Delays. While the Siilaanyo regime has drilled the extension phenomena for his government accede.
Therefore, they have engaged higher delegation with diplomatic mission, and the (EUSR HORN OF AFRICA TEAM) those who visited late March-2015 for the fact and find mission with coalition international prosecutes elections involving for the political future in Somaliland.
The two national opposition parties that leads Somaliland National party (WADDANI PARTY) and the right-wing Independent Democratic Union (undertaking consultation with elders forum) called ( MADASHA WADATASHIGA) has accused, the Siilaanyo regime by using the delayed tactics for to extend the up-coming election of Somaliland,
This turn of events proved a windfall for President Siilaanyo leftist supporters, fortunately the opposition coalition who was quickly denounced the Independent Democratic Union as a corrupt instrument of the political right.
They also took the opportunity to vilify for siilaanyo regime and denounce neoliberal policies that led to under-regulation of the National Election Commission. This scandal received widespread attention for the international media, especially since international prosecutor’s election leaked confidential material for the municipality elections in Somaliland 2011
